SCDnezzy is a completely new and unique turbine design. It has a concrete floating body which is easy to build and sets a milestone in terms of manufacturing costs. Turbine and floating body are combined to form one unit. The entire assembly and test work is done solely onshore and a fully commissioned turbine can be towed by two standard tug boats offshore and immediately put into operation.
2018: SCD 6 MW 1:10 model Test in Japanese waters
Driven by today’s hands-on experience to cut offshore costs drastically, SCD nezzy is based on an inexpensive floating body made of pre-stressed concrete elements in a dock. The key advantage of this design where almost all work steps happen onshore under conditions that are easier to control than under rough offshore conditions starts right away with this step. A profi led leaning steel tower sits on this concrete floating body and is fixed by preloaded steel rods. The turbine is designed with a downwind rotor for self-adjustment. Beside the downwind floating concept there is another key to cost reduction: a load-optimized tower and thus cheaper turbine. The steel ropes on the turbine head transfer and distribute the loads directly into the anchor chains. Furthermore, the downwind driven system requires no yaw bearing, yaw drives or yaw brakes as the wind turns the turbine into the wind direction. Less parts, less defects, less maintenance! In addition to that and compared to today’s designs, the SCDnezzy turbine covers water depths between 40 and 200 m and there are no restrictions or requirements at all in terms of seabed shape and geological conditions. No piles must be rammed into the seabed; no transportation ship and jack-up platform for erection are needed. Only three anchors are placed before the turbine arrives. The anchor chains are connected to a floating hub unit which serves as chain connection, pivot point, grid connection and power slip ring. When the tug-towed turbine arrives, it is attached to this unit and operation can start without any commissioning.
